So, every time anyone hears the words “comic book” they think superheroes.  Maybe Spider Man, or Iron Man, or Superman.  What some people don’t realize is how vast and expansive the comic book realm really is.  There are so many different types of comic books that almost anyone can find something they would like.

There are sci-fi books, horror books, crime, noir, and many more.  Each genre has many different titles by many talented writers and artists so there is bound to be some titles that will catch your eye.  Some of those comics are even made for adults, in that their is mature content in them.  Some have gore, violence, nudity, and profanity, something you won’t get with most comics.

For some of the genres, especially horror or sci-fi, the visual aspect enhances the story in a way that a novel would not be able to.  It is a medium in which writers can tell a story and still have the optical stimulation that they wanted from it.

There are also comics that are more like social dramas or even humorous.  These usually have an alternative feel and have art that differs much from the horror or sci-fi ones.

Speaking of the art, sometimes the art is a big factor in which comic to read.  Horror and sci-fi comics usually have very viceral and dark tones that often fell dirty and for a reason.  The dark tones help to set the mood and also makes a good contrast when the violence becomes apparent.  However, the art in the crime or noir comic books is usually dry and shadowy, just like the stories.  The social dramas and humorous ones usually have very unique art that is specific to the tone and mood of the story.

These comcis are very different from the superhero comics that everyone seems to consider as the main type of comic book.  The fact is that there are so many different types, that all you have to do is look around, at comic book stores, online, and you can find a comic that will interest you.  Just give comics a chance, they may surprise you.
