Comic Books and You
Welcome all to my Comic Book Buzz blog. What will this be all about? Well, in this blog, I plan on talking about comics. Not just about storylines, characters, and new releases, however. I want to put out an informative blog that not only is for comic book fans, but for people who may not know anything about comic books. I want to discuss every subject possible in the comic book realm. so for this first little entry, we will start with the basics of comic books.
Every guy or gal who likes comics remembers when and why they got into it. Its usually in their childhood, and it was for a couple of usual reasons. Either it was the action, the art, or the cool stories and characters, but most people have at least read a comic book or two. For me, I recall that my dad had loads of old comics he collected as a kid, and one day he let me look at them and read some. There were some classic Marvel comics, you know, Spiderman, Thor, Iron Man, the usual. I just thought it was so cool. As I grew up, I drifted away, mainly because my mother was not a fan of comics, so in our house, comics slowly became discouraged. But as I moved out and started to get back into comics, I found that I was really missing something I loved. Now, as I mentioned before, everyone remembers when it started. When you were a kid and reading comics was normal. But as people get older, comics seems to become a juvenile thing. The question is why?
Lets examine juvenile reading material. Now excluding children books, what other books can be perceived as immature or juvenile? Some may say reading gossip magazines about celebrity mishaps and moments is a bit ridiculous, but people still do it. In fact, some people obsess over all the twists and turns of certain celebrities almost with the same passion a comic book reader would obsess over a character or story. How about women who read those cheesy romance novels with the shirtless men on the cover? You see, there is a certain perception that makes comic books stand apart from these and almost get put below them. Nerds.
Comic book readers are often referred to as “comic book nerds” for the same reason Star Wars fanatics and Trekkies are usually the bud of some joke or generic nerd character in a movie. Its the cultural belief that extensive knowledge of all or even one of these topics is related to a lack of a social life. This is not true. Yes, some people really obsess and put all their money into making sure they have every peice of memorbilia, but most comic book “nerds” are just people who grew up with comics and enjoy the stories and the characters. And there is nothing wrong with enjoying a story or a character and following it.
The main point i am trying to get across is that comic books are more that nerd reading material or pretty pictures and a few words. They are a mythology set in popular media. I will try to present a way for everyone to understand comics and their place in this world. I will try to offer up ways that comic book nerds wont be so, nerdy, and how others can understand and maybe give comics a chance. So hopefully you’ve got a good idea of where this blog will be going and I hope you enjoy the ride.
Doug.
